CGC1P Issues in Canadian Geography – GRADE 9

CGC1P online at Profectus focuses on current geographic issues that affect Canadians. Students will draw on their personal and everyday experiences as they explore issues relating to food and water supplies, competing land uses, interactions with the natural environment, and other topics relevant to sustainable living in Canada. In CGC1P online, they will also develop an awareness that issues that affect their lives in Canada are interconnected with issues in other parts of the world. Throughout the course, students will use the concepts of geographic thinking, the geographic inquiry process, and spatial technologies to guide and support their investigations.

UNIT 1 :

Geographic Inquiry and Skill Development (18.5hrs)

Students will be able to:

  • Geographic Inquiry: use the geographic inquiry process and the concepts of geographic thinking when investigating issues relating to Canadian geography.
  • Developing Transferable Skills: apply in everyday contexts skills, including spatial technology skills, developed through the investigation of Canadian geography, and identify some careers in which a background in geography might be an asset.

UNIT 2 :

Interactions in the Physical Environment (18.5hrs)

Students will be able to:

  • Natural Processes and Human Activity: analyse some interactions between physical processes, events, and phenomena and human activities in Canada (FOCUS ON: Interrelationships; Geographic Perspective).
  • Influence of the Natural Environment on Human Activity: explain how physical processes and the natural environment influence human activity in Canada (FOCUS ON: Spatial Significance; Interrelationships).
  • Characteristics of Canada’s Natural Environment: describe some natural processes and key characteristics of the natural environment in Canada (FOCUS ON: Spatial Significance; Patterns and Trends).

UNIT 3 :

Managing Canada’s Resources and Industries (18.5hrs)

Students will be able to:

  • Managing Resources: assess the influence of personal choices and community actions on the use of natural resources in Canada (FOCUS ON: Interrelationships; Geographic Perspective).
  • Canadian Industries: describe the economic, environmental, social, and political significance of selected aspects of Canada’s resources and industries (FOCUS ON: Patterns and Trends; Geographic Perspective).
  • The Use of Natural Resources: describe the distribution and use of selected natural resources in Canada (FOCUS ON: Spatial Significance; Interrelationships).

UNIT 4 :

Changing Populations (18.5hrs)

Students will be able to:

  • Population Trends and Their Impacts: assess the impact on Canadian communities of changes in the characteristics of Canada’s population, and describe ways of responding to these changes (FOCUS ON: Patterns and Trends; Geographic Perspective).
  • Immigration Trends: analyse recent immigration trends in Canada (FOCUS ON: Interrelationships; Patterns and Trends).
  • Population Characteristics: describe key characteristics of population settlements in Canada and the major demographic characteristics of the Canadian population (FOCUS ON: Spatial Significance; Patterns and Trends).

UNIT 5 :

Liveable Communities (18.5hrs)

Students will be able to:

  • Sustainable Communities: identify factors that affect the sustainability of communities, and describe strategies for improving their sustainability (FOCUS ON: Interrelationships; Geographic Perspective).
  • Impacts of Land Use: analyse impacts of land use in Canada on communities and the natural environment (FOCUS ON: Spatial Significance; Interrelationships).
  • Patterns of Land Use: describe patterns of land use in their local community (FOCUS ON: Spatial Significance; Patterns and Trends).

FINAL 30%

Course Culmination (17.5hrs)

The Culminating Unit incorporates all four strands of the Canadian and World Studies Curriculum, and covers the four achievement chart categories. It consists of two parts:

  • Culminating Project worth 15% and a
  • Final Exam worth 15%

Online Course Policies

Listed below are various mandatory policies as you take on this course.

  • Attendance is regularly tracked through student contributions to online discussion boards, assignment completion, and learning logs. Failure to complete allocated activities may challenge the student’s ability to attain the credit.
  • This course will be presented using an asynchronistic model whereby work will be posted on the Google Classroom and it is the student’s responsibility to complete it on their own time.
  • ALL portions of this course are intended to be learned and completed online.
  • Final Exams and Tests will be written on site at Profectus Academy of Toronto. Course instructors will relay this information to students and families.
  • The integrity of student work will be checked on an ongoing basis using Quetext or Turnitin. Plagiarism is not tolerated.

The final grade will be determined as follows:

  • 70% based on Assessment OF Learning (including conversations, observations and products) conducted throughout the course.
  • 30% based on Culminating Tasks administered at or towards the end of the course.

Assessment and evaluation is divided into two important parts. The grade the student receives on a midterm or final report indicates achievement/ proficiency in Curriculum Expectations. A level of competence (Needs Improvement, Satisfactory, Good or Excellent) will be assessed and reported in the area of Learning Skills and Work Habits: Independent Work, Collaboration, Responsibility, Initiative, Self-Regulation, and Organization.
